DRU COMPLEX
„De Koninklijke Diepenbrock en Reigers of Ulft“, DRU for short, is one of the oldest and most important manufacturers of cast iron and household goods in the Netherlands. The first blast furnaces were built in 1754 on the outskirts of the small town of Ulft due to the iron ore-bearing soil. Since then, the site has been expanded and modernized with many production halls. Nowadays, most of the production is located elsewhere, as changes in transportation and production possibilities have made other criteria more important for the choice of location. A few years ago, some buildings in the Ulft Industrial Park were designated as historical monuments and others were demolished to create a new area designed for tourism and events. In the course of this, Ulft wants to make the site accessible not only to day tourists but also to people from all over the world in order to further promote the name DRU and the history of Ulft. Accommodation, exhibition spaces and additional areas for events and meetings are planned.
The SSP hall, whose interior is very large and therefore difficult for visitors to grasp in terms of scale, is partially filled by differentiated and interlocking exhibition spaces. They follow the construction grid of the SSP hall, as well as the grid created by the windows, which are considered historically important. The painted windows and bricks from demolished buildings are reused as building materials and thus embody the atmosphere of the site‘s history.
